About Baton Rouge, LA

The first French settlement in the Baton Rouge area was established in 1718. The city was incorporated in 1819 and became the state capital in 1849. Baton Rouge is on the Mississippi River in the southern part of Louisiana. Downtown Baton Rouge, LA is on the waterfront.

There are a number of attractions in downtown Baton Rouge. The Old Governor’s Mansion has personal belongings from the state’s governors. Fire trucks from 1919 to 1926 are displayed at the Old Bogan Fire Station. The Old Arsenal Museum has displays on Baton Rouge’s military history. Exhibits at the Old State Capitol provide information about Louisiana’s history. The Louisiana Art & Science Museum has interactive exhibits for children. The Louisiana State Museum has exhibits on Louisiana’s culture.

The Capital Park Trolley provides free service through downtown from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays.
